JOB TITLE:
Secondary School Teacher – English as an Additional Language
Reporting to: Head of Learning Support
Key Personnel: Head of Department for English, Assistant Principal of Secondary, Deputy Principal, Principal
Key Objectives of The Position
To carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require and in accordance
with the school's policies under the direction of the school's Principal.
Specific Duties
The Secondary school teacher shall be responsible for:
Pedagogy and Curriculum planning:
Employing effective pedagogy that enables students to become successful learners who achieve personal excellence by:
· Developing and executing the preparation, planning and delivery of English as an Additional Language (CEFR levels A2-B1) classes and activities for students to build up their proficiency to take the IGCSE ESL examination in year 11
· Building student confidence in handling IGCSE subjects such as Global Perspectives, Science and Economics through vocabulary, reading and writing strategies
· Connecting with subject teachers for an understanding of students' strengths and weaknesses pertaining to English proficiency
· Connecting with subject teachers to co-plan EAL lessons that are aligned with the topics and skills covered during subject lessons
· Using group strategies for a variety of different learning situations, including whole class, small group, partner work and individual work
· Building on student capabilities and differentiating to meet students' language needs
· Using assessment information to plan progression for the differing needs of learners in class
· Using appropriate assessment tools for formative and summative assessment
· Involving students, parents and colleagues in the assessment process on a regular basis
· Evaluating the program collaboratively with teaching partners, and parents and students
Extended Professional Role:
· Participate in professional duties as necessary outside of the scope of the school day (e.g. Field studies trips, professional development on weekends, as needed, and after school meetings as required)
· Supervising the students at break/lunch and other unstructured times
· Teaching assigned classes including the supervision of classes for absence cover
· Undertaking appropriate professional training stipulated by the school
· Being involved in Co or Extra Curricular Activities to enhance the school experience for learners.
· Being involved in school pastoral and academic programs
· Maintaining a good standard of discipline among students with due respect to their health and safety
· Preparing students for and participating in the conduct of internal and external examinations
· Actively engaging in the school's appraisal procedures
· Carrying out other duties and tasks as reasonably directed by the principal
Qualifications and Experience
· At least 2 years of experience in working with international secondary students as an EAL teacher
· A degree plus teaching qualification (or equivalent) in the teaching of the English as a Second Language (preferably) or English Language
· Intermediate to advanced level of knowledge of Language Acquisition for Multilingual Learners
· Possess highly developed interpersonal and teamwork skills
· Excellent verbal and written English skills
· Good references on request
· Proficient in using school databases, communications platforms, and educational technology
· Proficiency in other EAL testing and reporting systems
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:45am to 4:30pm (flexi-hours apply: 8.15am to 5.00pm)
