UWCSEA Dover is seeking an experienced and qualified individual for the position of Freelance Debate Instructor (IEC), from December 2025 to June 2026.
Reporting to the Activities Manager, this freelance position will be responsible for teaching students how to research, prepare, and present compelling arguments, as well as moderating and judging debates.
The role involves working with students from diverse backgrounds and supporting them in developing the skills to effectively articulate and defend their ideas.
Main Responsibilities
Create and implement lesson plans to teach students the basics of debate, critical thinking, and public speaking.
Instruct and assist students on how to conduct research, organise ideas, and deliver them clearly and persuasively.
Give students feedback and evaluations on their debate skills and progress.
Organise and supervise student debates, as well as stimulate discussions on contentious issues.
Work with other educators to create a curriculum and improve the debate program.
Keep up with the newest debate instruction trends, tactics, and resources.
Person Specifications
Certified adjudicator from Julia Gabriel’s / Debate Association (Singapore) is preferred; equivalent experience will also be considered.
Trained debater with experience coaching at MOE schools in Singapore (or comparable debate coaching experience in other contexts).
Bachelor’s degree holder / currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in a relevant field is an advantage, though other qualifications with strong experience will also be considered.
Supervisory or leadership experience in debate clubs at the secondary school, junior college, or university level.
Experience coaching and preparing teams for national-level tournaments such as SSDC (Division 1) and MIDC, or similar debate competitions.
Extensive adjudication/debate experience at debate competitions in all mainstream debate formats - i.e. WSDC, BP, Asians.
Broad and comprehensive understanding of local Singaporean competitive Debate circuit.
Experience in organising debate tournaments is a bonus.
Strong interpersonal, organisational, written and oral communication skills.
Experience with Google Suites is ideal but not essential.
Able to work cohesively in a team-based environment (with activity coordinators, teachers, parents, students) as well as independently and passionate about working with students from G6 to G12.
Ability to build high performing Debate coaching teams by focusing on developing, coaching, and motivating to enable players, instructors and parents to improve performance and to reach their full potential.
Ability to understand and anticipate Debate customers' (students/ parents)’ needs, being sensitive to their situations, opinions and culture, and take action to provide high quality training and service opportunities that exceed their expectations.
