About the role
We’re looking for an experienced leader to head up our Middle Office for Trading & Shipping – a critical function at the heart of Ampol’s global energy operations.
This role oversees risk management, product control, and governance , ensuring our trading activities run seamlessly, transparently, and within appetite.
You’ll partner closely with Front Office, Finance, Treasury and Supply teams across Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, the US and future European markets , providing independent oversight of market and credit exposures, risk measurement, compliance monitoring and reporting to senior management and the Board.
Key responsibilities
- Lead a high performing Middle Office team, providing guidance, training and performance management.
- Contribute to the development of trading strategies and operational improvement to develop our global model.
- Provide independent market views and concise updates to senior stakeholders, ensuring a clear understanding of inherent financial risks.
- Represent the Middle Office in cross‑functional meetings and initiatives.
- Oversee independent oversight of commodity risk management and trading activities, maintaining integrity of positions and analysis.
- Maintain fit‑for‑purpose control documents and manage risk limits within appetite.
- Oversee performance reports including MTM P&L, exposure and position limits and ensure compliance with policies.
- Collaborate with traders, operations, credit risk, compliance and finance teams to resolve issues and review risk‑taking strategies.
- Lead process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and reduce errors.
- Operate a Commodity Risk Management Committee forum, providing materials and strategic direction.
- Manage risk and control agenda including audits, interfacing with internal and external auditors and identifying process gaps.
- Work closely with senior management on cost‑saving opportunities.
- Undertake special reviews and projects, ensuring recommendations from external consultants and auditors are actioned.
Qualifications
- Tertiary qualification in a quantitative discipline such as Finance, Accounting, Business, Engineering, Computer Science, Actuarial, Math.
- Post‑tertiary qualifications such as Master of Applied Finance, MBA, CFA, CA/CPA are well regarded.
- 15+ years of experience, with at least 5‑10 years in senior global Middle Office and market risk management roles in a trading environment or downstream oil industry.
Commercial experience is a plus.
- Experience leading teams across geographies and translating strategy and policy into action.
- Experience managing cross‑functional projects or initiatives of varying size and complexity.
Skills & Knowledge
- Strong understanding of oil markets, derivatives, and financial instruments – options experience preferred.
- Proficiency in trading and risk management systems (e.g. Allegro, Aspect, Lacima).
Experience in CTRM implementation would be a plus.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to translate complex information into clear reports.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment and work under pressure.
- Knowledge of market regulations and compliance standards in the oil trading industry.
- Experience managing large complex projects including change management.
- Superior skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI).
