Job description

This position is offered on an initial two-year full-time fixed term basis.

We are seeking a research active academic with a proven track record of effective teaching and experience in the field of Communications.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Teaching
Media and Communication Concepts
- This foundational course introduces students to major perspectives used in communication studies and introduces the basic communication theories, models, key terms and concepts used in the discipline.

It introduces students to a broad range of theories to evaluate communication and media in its many forms and investigate its relationship to society and culture.

Particular attention will be paid to communication functions, structures, audiences, news, media effects, advertising and propaganda, intersecting narratives such as gender, race and class that occur in communication contexts, as well as international and global communication, ideology and popular culture.


Digital Media Engagement
- This course provides students with an opportunity to investigate a range of digital and social media forms and practices.

It provides students with an opportunity to investigate social, political, economic, and cultural implications of digital media engagement from both Western and non-Western perspectives.

Students will also create a professional profile that enables and equips students to connect with industry professionals and become work ready.


Create Your Own Business
- This course explores activities, structures, and opportunities of creating a new (small) business in the media and communication industry.

Students will gain an understanding of the increasingly fragmented and digitized job market on a local, national, and international level, and the common practice of freelancing Ethical and legal frameworks for creating a new business will be considered and practical aspects such as incorporation & governance, finances, budgeting time and money, intellectual property and copyright, as well as marketing will be discussed.

Students will have the opportunity to work towards creating their own business.


Podcasting and Radio
- In this course, students will develop the skills to work in radio broadcasting and produce audio stories for streamed or online delivery.

The course will follow the production cycle of a podcast from conceiving an original podcast idea through production to post-production and distribution.

Students will analyse audio storytelling genres, techniques, and formats, and create their own audio project suitable for dissemination via broadcast or online podcasting platforms.

They will develop and apply live.


Public Relations Campaigns
- This course focuses on researching and planning a real-world public relations campaign.

Students will critically examine and evaluate a range of past campaigns considering strategic, theoretical, ethical and legal aspects of campaigning.

The course simulates an agency scenario that offers students insights into professional agency processes and practices.

Students will work independently to develop a comprehensive public relations campaign with a coherent storyline that addresses a client brief.


Multiplatform Journalism
- The course blends practical experience with critical insights into news genres and careers.

It will cover emerging trends in news, including strategies for dissemination of news via social media platforms.

Students will develop advanced writing, researching, interviewing, and production skills suitable for multiplatform journalism.

They will create fast turnaround, mobile news stories for television, online and social media audiences.


Research
Establish research programs and develop applications for external research funding.


Engage in collaborative research.


Conduct research and publish journal articles and conference papers.


Administration
Take an active role in the development of curricula for the Communications programs.


Take an active role implementing quality assurance processes.


Contribute to the decision-making process.


Active engagement with internal and external stakeholders.


Selection Criteria
Minimum a PhD in Communications or related discipline
Proven track record of effective undergraduate teaching in the field of Communications
Relevant professional experience in the industry
An understanding of emerging issues in the communications sector
Demonstrated research record including scholarly publications in academic journals
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to coordinate undergraduate courses
