Job Description
The candidate will:
- Take overall responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the Electron Microscopy Facility in MSE.
This facility includes an aberration-corrected scanning TEM (JEOL ARM200 STEM), a JEOL 2800 TEM, two dual-beam focused ion beams (FIBs) and associated equipment such as dedicated specimen holders, sample preparation facilities, and computer hardware.
- Provide user training and occasionally support to ad-hoc requests for the operation of the TEM, STEM and FIBs.
- Ensure smooth operation of the facilities by planning maintenance and repair work in advance, by liaising with the instrument manufacturers and the building maintenance team.
- Be the first point of contact of the Electron Microscopy Facility, both for the users, and towards the instrument manufacturers.
- Be willing to occasionally fulfil duties after office hours: as the first point of contact in case of calamities in the lab.
- Be responsible for keeping the documentation of the standard operation procedures up-to-date.
- Ensure the safety of the labs is in good order and keep the safety documents of the facility up to date.
- Assist on lab tours when there are visitors and outreach events.
Qualifications
- MSc or PhD degree.
- A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience is required in using and/or managing electron microscopes.
- The candidate must have a responsible attitude towards the smooth operation of the facility and be able to interact easily with various users and equipment vendors.
- The candidate must be capable of performing (or willing to learn) atomic-resolution STEM imaging, and high-quality electron spectroscopy, including data processing and the sharing of these results with the ad-hoc users.
