The Museum Technician (Gallery Maintenance & Art Handling) is a vital part of the museum's daily operations, responsible for ensuring that exhibition spaces are clean, safe, and presentable to the public, while also assisting with the safe movement and handling of artworks and exhibition materials.
This hands-on role requires a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a deep respect for the care of valuable and often fragile objects.
The ideal candidate is practical, dependable, and comfortable working behind the scenes to support the museum's exhibitions and visitor experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Gallery Maintenance
- Perform daily cleaning and maintenance of gallery spaces, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, and glass cleaning.
- Ensure that floors, walls, lighting, and display areas are clean, safe, and free of clutter or debris.
- Assist with the setup and takedown of temporary installations, furniture, and equipment for exhibitions or events.
- Monitor gallery conditions and report any damages, hazards, or maintenance needs to the operations supervisor.
Art Handling Support
- Assist with the safe handling, unpacking, packing, installation, and de-installation of artworks and exhibition materials under the supervision of curators or registrars.
- Help move crates, plinths, tools, and other equipment during exhibition changes.
- Follow strict protocols for handling, lifting, and transporting artworks to avoid damage.
- Maintain tools, art handling equipment, and workspaces in good condition.
General Operations Support
- Respond to cleaning or setup needs during special events, tours, or programs.
- Assist with trash removal, supply replenishment, and light maintenance tasks as required.
- Follow all health, safety, and security protocols within gallery and back-of-house spaces.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience in cleaning, facilities maintenance, or art handling is an asset.
- Basic knowledge of handling fragile or valuable objects preferred (training will be provided).
- Physically fit and able to lift, move, or carry objects up to 30 kg
- Comfortable using ladders, tools, and cleaning equipment.
- Detail-oriented, reliable, and respectful of museum objects and protocols.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends as needed.
Working Conditions:
- Regular standing, lifting, bending, and moving between galleries and storage spaces.
- Use of cleaning materials and art handling equipment.
- May involve occasional work in non-climate-controlled areas (e.g., loading docks or storage).
