FEAT (Future Energy Acceleration & Translation) Programme focuses on plasma diagnostics, microwave and radiofrequency (RF) heating and current drive (H&CD), and exhaust, with an emphasis on addressing challenges for future fusion energy systems.
The successful candidate will contribute to, and potentially lead, research in magnetic confinement fusion, using analytical, computational, and experimental approaches.
Participation in grant calls as a principal investigator will be highly encouraged.
The role aligns with FEAT’s plasma physics team and requires adapting to project needs and individual strengths.
Responsibilities
Understand the physics of fusion plasmas, exhaust, plasma diagnostics, and/or RF H&CD.
Publish peer‐reviewed papers and disseminate research findings.
Support local and international collaborators in fusion research.
Write grants and help shape the direction of fusion research in FEAT.
Supervise students and interns (optional).
Areas of focus for suitable candidates
Microwave plasma diagnostics, including experimental, computational, and AI approaches.
Theory and simulation of microwave and RF H&CD.
Theory and simulation of plasma–material interactions, including edge turbulence and transport, sheaths, and sheath–edge coupling.
Key qualifications
PhD in Physics, Plasma Physics, or equivalent, with a background in magnetic confinement fusion (plasma physics and/or engineering).
Deep knowledge in at least one of the following:
Microwave plasma diagnostics (including hardware experience).
Candidates with an experimental inclination may travel to international collaborators’ experiments for extended periods.
Theoretical plasma physics (e.g., plasma waves, turbulent transport).
Computational plasma physics (e.g., full‐wave, beam tracing, fluid dynamics, gyrokinetics).
Programming proficiency in Python, C/C++, and Julia (or equivalent).
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Resourcefulness and self‐motivation with high professional integrity.
