Overview
We are seeking a Senior Technician ( Visual Media/Projectionist ) to support all technical aspects of our productions and events at the arts centre.
While your core specialisation will be in visual media and projection, you will also support staging, sound, and lighting elements, collaborating closely with directors, designers, and production teams.
The Senior Technician (Visual Media/Projectionist) will also oversee the work of other technicians in Technical Production, including technical resources, and play a key role in training and developing staff in visual media.
Key Responsibilities
Assist with the load-in, setup, and strike of all video equipment.
Perform rigging operations and maintenance for theatrical productions, ensuring all video equipment is installed and used safely.
Operate and maintain video equipment including projectors, LED walls, media servers, and playback systems.
Program and operate video switchers, processors, and servers during rehearsals and live performances.
Ensure smooth delivery of video, images, and multimedia content in performances.
Collaborate with designers to implement projection/visual media cues and integrate them with sound, lighting, and scenic elements.
Work with the Stage Manager to execute technical cues across video, lighting, sound, and scenic changes.
Troubleshoot and repair technical equipment as needed to ensure smooth operations.
Maintain all video equipment in good working order, including regular testing, servicing, and inventory accountability to ensure operational readiness.
Perform regular safety checks and maintain a safe and organized backstage area.
Act as a crew member for video operations.
Provide crossover support for lighting, sound, and staging.
Basic knowledge of lighting, sound, and electrical/electronic is an asset.
Key Requirements
Minimum three years of experience in live entertainment, events, or theatre with a strong specialization in video, projection, or visual media systems.
ITE/Diploma or equivalent qualifications in a relevant technical field.
Demonstrated expertise in setup, calibration, and operation of
projectors, LED walls, and display systems .
Use of
media servers and playback systems
(e.g., Resolume software, Watchout, Disguise/d3, QLab, or similar).
Integration of video with lighting, sound, and scenic elements in live productions.
Basic knowledge of video signal flow, formats, and conversion (HDMI, SDI, DisplayPort, fibre).
Networking for media control (IP-based workflows, Dante Video/NDI a plus).
Supervisory experience with the ability to oversee crew and manage resources, including training staff.
Strong troubleshooting skills in high-pressure live performance environments.
Familiarity with projection mapping software and creative video applications is advantageous.
Proficiency in English (written and spoken); other languages an advantage.
Computer literacy with ability to adapt quickly to new technologies.
Training in First Aid and Fire Safety/Fire Fighting is an advantage.
Physical ability to lift and handle heavy projection/video equipment safely.
Able to work irregular hours, with hands-on work expected.
Knowledge of stage lighting, live audio reinforcement, electricity, and electronics will be considered an asset.
Salary range : $2,800 - $3,200
