A stage manager's job is to
ensure a production runs smoothly from start to finish by organizing the people and equipment involved .
Their responsibilities include:
Rehearsals Create and manage rehearsal schedules, coordinate the rehearsal process, and record the director's notes
Production Create a production plan for lighting, sound, scenery, and costumes, and manage the props, furniture, and sets
Performance Call technical cues, supervise the backstage and onstage areas, and handle any problems that arise
Communication Liaise with the director, producers, designers, and other technical departments to ensure everyone is on the same page
Safety Create a risk assessment to ensure the safety of the company, and make sure fire exits are clear and all lighting instruments are safety chained
Prompt book Create a prompt book, also known as the bible, which contains notes on actors' cues, lighting and sound requirements, and other important information
