Technical Specialist, Assistive Technology Programme

Job description

About Engineering Good

Engineering Good (EG) is a non-profit organisation based in Singapore, founded in 2014.

Through social innovation initiatives, we endeavour to support disadvantaged and special needs communities.

Our work focuses on two main areas: Digital Inclusion and Assistive Technology.

  • Digital Inclusion

We refurbish used laptops, and redistribute them to underserved communities such as low-income families.

This not only provides essential access for disadvantaged individuals and families to the digital world but also promotes environmental friendliness by reducing e-waste.

In addition, we collaborate with Community Partners to conduct digital literacy programmes for various groups of disadvantaged communities.

  • Assistive Technology (AT)

In our Assistive Technology programmes, we leverage the diverse talents of our skilled volunteer community to create assistive technology products.

These products help persons with disabilities (PWDs) overcome barriers to daily living activities, education, recreation, and employment, enabling them to reach their full potential and live more independently.

Our Impact

  • 10,000+ laptops refurbished and distributed
  • 28,000+ kg of e-waste diverted from landfills
  • 2,000+ assistive tech devices created
  • over 400 community partners served

Our work has enabled low-income students to attend online classes, disadvantaged persons to seek job opportunities online, assisted PWDs in daily living activities, and much more.

If you are also passionate about making a difference and want to be part of this supportive and innovative community, we invite you to join us in empowering those who need it most.

Job Purpose

As the Technical Specialist, you will play a critical role in advancing the impact of Engineering Good's work in the assistive technology (AT) space.

This role combines hands-on technical support with youth mentorship, working at the intersection of innovation and deployment.

You will lead the design, prototyping, and implementation of solutions for persons with disabilities (PWDs), while also nurturing a vibrant and inclusive maker community.

You will ensure that AT projects are technically sound, contextually appropriate, and ready for real-world deployment.

At the same time, you will contribute to building a strong open-source knowledge base and support advocacy efforts for inclusive design.

As an ambassador of Engineering Good's mission, you will champion the co-creation of affordable, open-source AT solutions that meet the diverse needs of our communities.

You will work closely with volunteers and staff to uphold a strong community spirit, grow skills-based volunteering, and support a team of passionate makers committed to driving positive social change.

This role offers you the opportunity to shape the next generation of empathetic youth innovators, amplify the voices of underserved communities, and contribute meaningfully to building a more inclusive society through technology.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Solution Innovation and Development

  • Work with other professionals, including allied health therapists, educators, and IT specialists, to define problem statements faced by PWDs
  • Work with the team - our Tech For Good Innovation programme participants and our community of skilled volunteers to ideate feasible, innovative (low-to-mid tech) AT solutions
  • Provide hardware and software support for AT projects and maker space activities.

  • Lead development and testing of prototypes to ensure they are practical, safe, and user-friendly
  • Iterate and refine the prototypes to minimal-viable-products (MVP) that can be deployed for use by persons with disabilities
  • Documenting solutions developed (manuals, guides, and open-source resources)

Mentorship & Capacity Building

  • Mentor and train youth innovators in technical and human-centred design skills.

  • Support participants throughout their innovation journey: from ideation to testing - to ensure project success and community relevance
  • Introduce DIY assistive technology concepts to wider audiences through running capacity-building Maker programme workshops

Maker Community Development & Volunteering

  • Manage and maintain the makerspace, ensuring equipment and inventory are organised, accessible, and well-utilised.

  • Develop and grow a vibrant maker community within Engineering Good to support the development of assistive technology projects.

  • Cultivate and coordinate skills-based volunteering from the tech, engineering, and maker community to support ongoing projects.

  • Facilitate collaboration among volunteers, youth, and community members in co-creating inclusive tech solutions.

Documentation & Knowledge Sharing

  • Maintain thorough documentation of all projects for impact reporting, donor engagement, and internal knowledge
  • Create clear build manuals and open-source documentation to enable replication of AT solutions.

  • Share learnings and best practices from projects with the broader AT and maker communities.

Qualifications and Skills

Engineering Good is an equal opportunity employer, and hires based on skills and competency.

  • Diploma or degree in engineering (electronics, mechanical, mechatronics, biomedical, computer engineering or related field)
  • 1 - 3 years of relevant experience; fresh graduates are welcome to apply.

  • Hands-on makers' skills in hardware, prototyping, or coding are an advantage.

  • Passion for using technology to create social impact.

Attributes and Competencies

  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Curious, adaptable, and comfortable working with diverse communities
  • Strong team collaboration skills
  • Be solution oriented and outcomes focused
  • Prior experience volunteering or working with a non-profit in Singapore will be an advantage
